A true houseplant classic, the Variegated Spider Plant is loved for its long, arching leaves striped with fresh green and creamy white. Its fountain-like growth creates a full, vibrant display while remaining wonderfully easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for almost any home.
As the plant matures, one of its most charming features begins to appear: long arching stems carrying clusters of small white flowers followed by baby spider plants, or plantlets. These miniature plants cascade around the parent plant, creating an increasingly full and impressive display.
The trailing plantlets make Spider Plants particularly well suited to hanging planters, high shelves and plant stands where their growth can be allowed to hang freely. The babies can also be propagated easily to create new plants of your own.
Adaptable, fast growing and forgiving, the Variegated Spider Plant performs best in bright, indirect light but will tolerate somewhat lower-light positions. Its straightforward care requirements make it particularly suitable for beginners or anyone looking for an attractive houseplant without lots of maintenance.
How to Care for a Variegated Spider Plant
• Position in bright, indirect light for strong growth and attractive variegation, avoiding prolonged harsh direct sunlight.
• Water when the top few centimetres of compost begin to dry, allowing excess water to drain freely.
• Use a good-quality, free-draining houseplant compost.
• Average household humidity is generally suitable, although Spider Plants also enjoy more humid rooms.
• Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.
• Mature plants will naturally produce plantlets, which can be left attached for a cascading display or removed and propagated.
