Description
Add extraordinary colour and texture to your collection with Alocasia cuprea ‘Red Secret’, an unusual jewel Alocasia renowned for its spectacular metallic foliage. Its thick, sculpted leaves combine shades of copper, bronze, deep green and burgundy, producing an almost iridescent appearance that changes depending on the light.
New foliage can emerge with particularly rich reddish and copper tones before developing the darker metallic colouring characteristic of mature leaves. Deeply recessed veins give each leaf a beautifully sculpted appearance, making ‘Red Secret’ look almost artificial at first glance.
Unlike some of the enormous Alocasia varieties, ‘Red Secret’ remains relatively compact, making it an excellent statement plant even where space is limited. It works beautifully on a plant stand, shelf or alongside other tropical foliage plants where its unusual colouring provides plenty of contrast.
Native to the tropical forests of Borneo, Alocasia cuprea appreciates warmth, humidity and consistent but careful watering. Give it bright, indirect light and an airy growing medium and it will reward you with increasingly impressive foliage as it matures.
How to Care for Alocasia ‘Red Secret’
• Position in bright, indirect light, protected from intense direct sunlight.
• Water when the upper few centimetres of compost begin to dry, keeping it lightly moist without becoming waterlogged.
• Use a loose, free-draining aroid mix that allows plenty of oxygen around the roots.
• Appreciates moderate to high humidity and warm, stable indoor temperatures.
• Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer with a diluted balanced houseplant fertiliser.
• Growth may slow or pause during the darker winter months, so reduce watering accordingly.
